This little blanket is the perfect crochet project to use up your scrap yarn and learn how to do the join-as-you-go (JAYG) method with granny squares. I designed this blanket to fit inside my dog’s carrier, but you can easily customize the size for a different purpose.

Sizing
- The finished blanket (including border) measures about 31″ (79cm) long x 27″ (69 cm) wide.
- To make the blanket larger, simply add more squares.
Yarn and Tools
- DK (weight 3) yarn, I used Stylecraft Special DK yarn (295 metres/322 yards, 100g ball)
- 4 mm (US size G-6, UK size 8) crochet hook
- Scissors, measuring tape, and yarn needle
- Stitch markers and row counter
- Pins and blocking mat (optional)
Pattern
Begin by making a classic granny square with seven rounds. You will make and join 20 granny squares in total.
Make a second square, this time with only six rounds. Round seven will be the joining round.
Here is my tutorial for making a classic granny square:

To learn the JAYG method, Made by Anita’s video “Join as you go – Crochet tutorial” is very well done and super easy to follow. This is the video that I used to learn this technique!

After joining in each square, weave in the yarn tail.
Border
Refer to the images at the end of this post for help on working the border.
Once all your squares are joined, we will add a three-round classic granny stitch border.
To do this, pull up a loop in a corner. Chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 2 double crochets in the same corner space, chain 2, then work 3 double crochets in the same corner space.
In the next space, 3 double crochet. When you get to the spaces where squares join, work the normal 3 double crochets on either side.
Repeat this pattern around, making 3 double crochets in the spaces along the sides and (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet) in each corner.
When you get back to the beginning, slip stitch into the first double crochet to join.
Make as many rounds as you like in the classic granny border. I made three rounds each in different colours. Weave in all your ends after the final round.
Congratulations, your blanket is all done! I hope you enjoyed this little project.
